Split a PDF into separate files by page ranges, downloaded as ZIP.
Split PDF Online for Free
Sometimes you only need a few pages from a large PDF. For example, you may want to separate selected chapters, share only the relevant pages of a report, or divide a scanned document into smaller sections. The ToolsA2Z PDF Splitter lets you enter page ranges and creates a separate PDF for each range. The separate files are packaged together in one ZIP download.
How to split a PDF into separate files
- Upload your PDF: Choose a PDF file from your phone, tablet, or computer.
- Enter page ranges: Type each group in the Ranges field. Use a hyphen for a continuous range and a semicolon to separate output files.
- Check the page numbers: Page numbering starts at 1. Make sure every number is within the PDF’s page count.
- Select Split PDF: The tool creates one PDF for each range you entered.
- Download the ZIP: Save the ZIP file and extract it to access the individual PDF documents.
Examples of page ranges
- 1-3;4-6 creates two PDFs: pages 1–3 and pages 4–6.
- 1,3,5;6-8 creates one PDF containing pages 1, 3 and 5, and another containing pages 6–8.
- 2-5;8;10-12 creates three separate PDFs: pages 2–5, page 8, and pages 10–12.
Use commas to list individual pages within one output group, and semicolons to start a new output group. Use ascending ranges, such as 2-5, rather than 5-2. Avoid entering page numbers that do not exist in your document.
Why use a PDF splitter?
Splitting can make a large document easier to organise, send, archive, or upload. Common examples include separating invoice sections, extracting chapters from study material, sharing selected pages from a business report, and dividing a scanned bundle into smaller documents. It can also help when a website has a maximum upload size, although splitting does not guarantee that every resulting file will meet a particular size limit.
Important things to check
- Confirm the page ranges before processing; each range becomes a separate PDF.
- Open the ZIP after downloading and check that all expected PDF files are present.
- Review the first and last page of each output to confirm the correct range was selected.
- Keep the original PDF until you have checked the split files.
- For official or signed documents, retain the original and verify any signature or document-integrity requirements separately.
Privacy and browser processing
The selected PDF is processed in your browser by the page’s JavaScript code; the tool code does not send the document to a ToolsA2Z server. The page loads PDF and ZIP processing libraries from public CDNs, so an internet connection is needed to load those libraries. Large documents may use significant browser memory and can take longer to process, especially on older mobile devices.
Limitations
This tool separates pages into new PDF files; it is not a PDF editor and does not change the text or images on a page. Some encrypted, damaged, or unusually complex PDFs may not process successfully. Interactive elements, bookmarks, annotations, forms, or digital signatures may not be preserved exactly as in the source file when pages are copied into new documents. If these features are important, compare the output with the original and keep the source file.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split a PDF into multiple files?
Yes. Enter multiple page groups separated by semicolons. Each group becomes a separate PDF inside the ZIP download.
How do I split pages 1 to 5 and 6 to 10?
Enter 1-5;6-10 in the Ranges field. This creates two separate PDF files.
Can I select individual pages?
Yes. Separate individual page numbers with commas within one group, for example 1,3,5. Use a semicolon to create another output file.
Why is the result downloaded as a ZIP?
The tool can create multiple PDF files in one operation. A ZIP archive packages those files into one convenient download.
Does splitting reduce PDF size?
Not necessarily. Splitting divides pages into separate files; it does not compress the page content.
Are my files uploaded to ToolsA2Z?
The selected PDF is processed locally in your browser by the page code. External JavaScript libraries are loaded from public CDNs.
Why does the tool show an invalid page range?
Check that page numbers start at 1, do not exceed the PDF’s page count, and use ascending ranges such as 2-5. Separate output groups with semicolons.
